The Gopīs are Excited by the Sound of Kṛṣṇa’s Flute
प्राहिणोन्मुरलिकां स्वदूतिका-
मच्युतः श्रुतियुगे विधृत्य या ।
प्रेयसीं निजकलेन लम्भयेत्
कण्ठमस्य कनकस्रजं यथा ॥ ११ ॥
prāhiṇon-muralikāṁ svadūtikām
acyutaḥ śruti-yuge vidhṛtya yā |
preyasīṁ nija-kalena lambhayet
kaṇṭham asya kanaka-srajaṁ yathā || 11 ||
Then Kṛṣṇa dispatched his own messenger in the form of his muralī flute to capture his beloved through her ears with its soft, sweet tones and place her like a golden garland around his neck. (Kṛṣṇa-Bhāvanāmṛtam 8.34)
मधुरिम-रसवापी-मत्तहंसी-प्रजल्पः
प्रणयकुसुमवाटी-भृङ्गसङ्गीतघोषः ।
सुरतसमरभेरी-भाङ्कृतिः पूतनारे-
र्जयति हृदयदंशी कोऽपि वंशीनिनादः ॥ १२ ॥
madhurima-rasa-vāpī-matta-haṁsī-prajalpaḥ
praṇaya-kusuma-vāṭī-bhṛṅga-saṅgīta-ghoṣaḥ |
surata-samara-bherī-bhāṅkṛtiḥ pūtanārer
jayati hṛdaya-daṁśī ko’pi vaṁśī-ninādaḥ || 12 ||
The heart-stinging sound of Kṛṣṇa’s flute conquers all, like the prattle of intoxicated swans in a lake of sweet rasa, or like the sound of singing bees in a flower garden made of love, or the sound of a kettledrum in Cupid’s battle. (Caitanya-Candrodaya-Nāṭakam 3.31)
स हरिमुरलिकाया निस्वनोऽभूद्वधूनां
श्रवणसविधचारी मन्मथोन्माथकारी ।
अविकलकुलशीलाचारचर्याभिचारो
धृतिविघटनतन्त्रः कोऽपि मन्त्रः स्वतन्त्रः ॥ १३ ॥
sa hari-muralikāyā nisvano’bhūd vadhūnāṁ
śravaṇa-savidhacārī manmathonmāthakārī |
avikala-kula-śīlācāra-caryābhicāro
dhṛti-vighaṭana-tantraḥ ko’pi mantraḥ svatantraḥ || 13 ||
When the sound of Hari’s muralī flute entered the girls’ ears, like some self-willed mantra it aroused their amorous feelings, exorcised all the moral behaviors common to their families and cast a spell that destroyed their firmness. (Ānanda-Vṛndāvana-Campūḥ 17.15)
विषायमाणं मधुरं तथोग्रं
वाञ्छापकं सा च निशम्य वंश्याः ।
नादं विनिन्द्यापि प्रशस्य तां तं
सखीसमूहं पुनराह राधा ॥ १४ ॥
viṣāyamāṇaṁ madhuraṁ tathograṁ
vāñchāpakaṁ sā ca niśamya vaṁśyāḥ |
nādaṁ vinindyāpi praśasya tāṁ taṁ
sakhī-samūhaṁ punar āha rādhā || 14 ||
After hearing the sound of that flute, which is at once sweet and as bitter as poison, and which fulfills its own desires, Śrī Rādhā both praised and condemned it in her words to the sakhīs.
अजडः कम्पसम्पादी शस्त्रादन्यो निकृन्तनः ।
तापनोऽनुष्णताधारः को वायं मुरलीरवः ॥ १५ ॥
ajaḍaḥ kampa-sampādī śastrād anyo nikṛntanaḥ |
tāpano’nuṣṇatādhāraḥ ko vāyaṁ muralī-ravaḥ || 15 ||
“O friend! Though the sound of Kṛṣṇa’s muralī flute is not cold, it still causes us to tremble. Though not a sword, it cuts more deeply; and though not hot, it causes us to burn. (Vidagdha-Mādhava-Nāṭakam 1.70)
सूतिस्ते धनुषश्च वंशवरतो वन्दे तयोरन्तिमं
विद्धो येन जनस्तनुं विरहयन्नान्तश्चिरं ताम्यति ।
विद्धानां हृदि मारपत्रिविषमैर्ध्वानेषुभिर्नस्त्वया
क्रूरे वंशि न जीवनं न च मृतिर्घोराविरासीद्दशा ॥ १६ ॥
sūtis te dhanuṣaś ca vaṁśa-varato vande tayor antimaṁ
viddho yena janas tanuṁ virahayan nāntaś ciraṁ tāmyati |
viddhānāṁ hṛdi māra-patri-viṣamair dhvāneṣubhir nas tvayā
krūre vaṁśi na jīvanaṁ na ca mṛtir ghorāvirāsīd daśā || 16 ||
“O cruel flute! Both you and the bow have taken birth from a noble family, but I can only praise the latter. When a person is pierced by a bow and must give up his body, he is not forced to suffer long. But those of us whose hearts have been pierced by the terrible arrows of the god of love, in the form of your music, are in the dreadful condition of being neither dead nor alive. (Vidagdha-Mādhava-Nāṭakam 1.24)
सरन्ध्रा नीरन्ध्रा भवति मुखरागैर्मधुपतेः
कठोरा सारस्यं गमयति कठोरान्तरमपि ।
अतूष्णीका तूष्णीकयति मृगपक्षिप्रभृतिकं
स्वयं वंशे जाता विकलयति सद्वंशजवधूः ॥ १७ ॥
sarandhrā nīrandhrā bhavati mukha-rāgair madhupateḥ
kaṭhorā sārasyaṁ gamayati kaṭhorāntaram api |
atūṣṇīkā tūṣṇīkayati mṛga-pakṣi-prabhṛtikaṁ
svayaṁ vaṁśe jātā vikalayati sad-vaṁśaja-vadhūḥ || 17 ||
“Though having holes, this flute is made perfect by the melodies from Kṛṣṇa’s mouth; although hard, it causes even the hard-hearted to become gracious; though not silent, it silences the animals and birds; though itself born in a noble family, it bewilders the girls who are also born in noble families. (Ānanda-Vṛndāvana-Campūḥ 11.133)
स्वयं शून्याप्यन्तर्बहु वहति रागव्यतिकरं
दधात्येकं पर्व प्रकटयति पर्वाणि शतशः ।
कलान् धत्ते रम्यान् विकलयति सर्वं जगदहो
मुरारेर्वंशीयं जडयति समुल्लासयति च ॥ १८ ॥
svayaṁ śūnyāpy antar bahu vahati rāga-vyatikaraṁ
dadhāty ekaṁ parva prakaṭayati parvāṇi śataśaḥ |
kalān dhatte ramyān vikalayati sarvaṁ jagad aho
murārer vaṁśīyaṁ jaḍayati samullāsayati ca || 18 ||
“Though hollow, it carries within itself so many beautiful songs; though having only one joint, it gives rise to festivals by the hundreds; though emitting sweet, enjoyable tones, it confuses the whole world. Murāri’s flute both stuns and exhilarates. (Ānanda-Vṛndāvana-Campūḥ 11.134)
कलोऽप्यस्याः सूक्ष्मो विलसति विसारी त्रिभुवने
विशत्यन्तः-श्रोत्रं सकलतनुपीडां रचयति ।
रसं नानाकारं सहजमधुरोऽप्येष तनुते
कदाचित् पीयूषं वितरति कदाचिद्विषमपि ॥ १९ ॥
kalo’py asyāḥ sūkṣmo vilasati visārī tribhuvane
viśaty antaḥ-śrotraṁ sakala-tanu-pīḍāṁ racayati |
rasaṁ nānākāraṁ sahaja-madhuro’py eṣa tanute
kadācit pīyūṣaṁ vitarati kadācid viṣam api || 19 ||
“Although its soft tones are subtle, they resonate throughout the three worlds; though they enter through the ears, they create suffering in the entire body; although naturally sweet, they produce many different kinds of rasas. Sometimes they bestow nectar and sometimes they bring poison. (Ānanda-Vṛndāvana-Campūḥ 11.135)
न जाने सा वंश्युद्गिरति गरलं वामृतरसं
न जाने तन्नादोऽप्यशनिपरुषो वाम्बुमृदुलः ।
न जाने चात्युष्णो ज्वलितदहनाद्वेन्दुशिशिरो
यतो जातोन्मादा मुमुहुरखिलास्ते व्रजजनाः ॥ २० ॥
na jāne sā vaṁśy udgirati garalaṁ vāmṛta-rasaṁ
na jāne tan-nādo’py aśani-paruṣo vāmbu-mṛdulaḥ |
na jāne cātyuṣṇo jvalita-dahanād vendu-śiśiro
yato jātonmādā mumuhur akhilās te vraja-janāḥ || 20 ||
“I do not know whether that flute emits poison or nectar; whether its sound is hard like a thunderbolt or soft like water; whether it is hotter than a blazing fire or cool like the moon. All the residents of Vraja have been afflicted with madness from just hearing its sound. (Bṛhad-Bhāgavatāmṛtam 2.6.48)
