vidhu-mukhi! kim-u zeSe nirbharaM rAtri-zeSe? |

pramada-madhupa-puJje mA paraM tiSTha kuJje

na gaNayasi vigarhAM kiM guruNAm anarhAm? ||

“O Moon-face! Having obtained the embrace of Vrajendranandana, all fear is gone from your heart. But why, even at the end of night, do you lie there sound asleep? Don’t stay any longer in this bower full of drunken bees. Do you not consider the undeserved criticism you’d get from your elders?”

BSS Nisanta 15-16 Correction

prabhaJjano raJjayituM nikuJja-rAjau vyarAjiSTa mudA tadAnIm |

manye prabudhya zlatha-durbalAGgo drutaM prayAtuM na tarAM zazAka || 15 ||

Then a gentle breeze joyfully arose just to please Radha-Krishna, the king and queen of the bowers. I think this soft breeze wafted through the air so slowly because it too had just awakened from its slumber and could barely move its tired and listless limbs. (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.17)

yA vRkSa-vallyo vyakasaMs tadaiva tAz cumbaMs tadAmoda-bharair dizo-daza |

prasAritaiH zvAsapatha-pravezitair bhRGgAvalIr jAgarayAM-cakAra saH || 16 ||

Kissing the flowering creepers as it drifted along, this breeze bore their sweet fragrances throughout the forest and awakened the sleeping bees. (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.18)

BSS Nisanta 14 Correction

tAmbUla-mAlA-vividhAnulepair aGgAra-dhAnyAguru-vaizva-dhUpaiH |

kAlocitais taiH pratipAdyamAnaiH kati-kSaNAMs tA gamayAM babhUvuH || 14 ||

A few manjaris passed the time by stringing garlands and preparing tambula and various cosmetic ointments. Another began to place pieces of incense made of aguru and myrrh into a charcoal burner. (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.16)

BSS Nisanta 13 Correction

sa kRSNa-meghaH sthira-caJcalAlI-vRto’timAdhurya-rasair amUH kim? |

AsnApayat svArhaNa-kRtya-vRttAH pratyarhaNenAdita eva dhinvan || 13 ||

Another manjari exclaimed, “Look! Is that a dark cloud encircled by lightning bolts? It seems to be showering the kinkaris with madhurya-rasa. Usually servants please their masters and then receive a reward, but today they have received it even before the service.” (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.15)

itas tato nyasta-maNi-pradIpAn aphulla-nIlotpala-campakAbhAn |

vidhatta etau sva-mayUkha-vRndair anAvRtair maNDana-mAlya-celaiH || 12 ||

Radha-Krishna wore no clothing, ornaments or garlands, and their lustrous complexions caused the jeweled lamps placed here and there in the cottage to appear as buds of either campaka or blue lotus. (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.9)

BSS Nisanta 10 Correction

nizAnta-sevocita-mAlya-vITikA-kRtyAtta-cittA atha kAcid Aha tAH |

anaGga-baddhAGga-yuva-dvayocchalat-saurabhya-saulabhyavatI rasoccalA || 10 ||

As the kinkaris absorbed themselves in seva appropriate for the end of night, such as stringing garlands and making tambula, one girl, having smelled the sweet fragrances of Radha-Krishna’s bodies, excitedly told the others, “Look! They’re still bound together by the god of love!” (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.7) 

BSS Nisanta 9 Correction

papracchur anyonyam imA mimAnayA rasaM parIhAsa-bhRtaM sajRmbhayA |

girA cirAj jAgara-mUDha-ghUrNana-sva-svAkSi-bhRGgI-tati-lIDha-vakSasaH || 9 ||

After some time, with yawning, languid speech, they began to jokingly inquire about each other’s breasts, whose love-marks were relished by their own drowsy, bee-like rolling eyes. (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.6)

BSS Nisanta 7-8 Correction

pratisva-sevAvasara-prabodhitA-sadAtanAbhyAsa-juSo’tha kiGkarIH |

nidraiva rAtryantam avetya tA jahau saiva svayaM jAgarayAJ cakAra kim? || 7 ||

Realizing that the night had ended, could it be that the Goddess of Sleep had personally awakened Sri Radha’s kinkaris, who each rose just in time to perform her cherished seva? (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.4)

utthAya talpAc cakitekSaNAH kSaNAn duhAnayor nAgara-cakravartinoH |

svApaM rahaH-svApam abhaGgam aGganA AlakSya tUSNIm adhizayam Asata || 8 ||

After awakening, they became alarmed that the time for seva might have passed, so they began looking anxiously in every direction. Seeing that Radha and Krishna, the Sovereigns of Enjoyment, were still peacefully asleep, the kinkaris sat quietly upon their beds. (KRSNa-BhAvanAmRtam 1.5)

I remember Sri Radha-Krishna at the end of night. Alarmed that daylight has come, Vrindadevi sends the parrots and mynahs to waken them with the loud sounds of both pleasant and unpleasant poetry. Along with their sakhis, they then rise from their peaceful slumber. Seeing each other, Radha-Krishna become joyful and long for more lovemaking, but then they hear the monkey Kakkhati screeching, become afraid and return to their respective homes and beds. (Govinda-LIlAmRtam 1.10)
